DESIGNER PROFILE Tanya Krpan & Jenn Hoffbeck

Vancouver-based Krpan and Hoffbeck serve as in-house designers for Earls restaurants. The pair melds their creative psyches in order to renovate existing restaurants, develop new locations, as well as setting and maintaining office drawing standards. They were our point people on the branding and wallpaper design that was inspired by whimsical graphics from the early days of Earls.

Company/Organization: e+ Design & Construction (designers for Earls Restaurants)

Website: earls.ca

Education:
Tanya: British Columbia Institute of Technology - Interior Design Program
Jenn: Kwantlen Polytechnic University - Bachelor of Interior Design

Describe your work: Designing Earls Restaurants throughout Canada & the USA

Inspirations: Tanya is inspired by travel, travel and more travel. From the way the sky looks from a plane window, to the shapes the ocean makes when it crashes into sand, there is inspiration in everything we see. Both Jenn & Tanya follow many fashion and graphic design blogs. We love to be inspired by other genres of Design and experimenting with how Versace might inspire an Interior.

Awards or Recognition: Earls Restaurants won Gold and Silver Awards for Hospitality Design in this year’s IDIBC 2010 awards.

Future Projects/Goals: Naturally, we would both like to explore other types of Interior Design such as Retail or Hotel Design but Tanya would also love to explore Fashion Design one day.

What is one word that describes your artistic style?
Tanya definitely has an Eclectic style and finds the contrast between old and new interesting.
Jenn loves to design with Bold statements of colour and form.

How did you get to know ROLLOUT? Jenn remembers hearing about ROLLOUT while in Design School and was always hoping to work with them one day. We had been inspired to create a wallcovering that showcased Earls vintage menus and who better to help us capture a piece of history in a modern design than ROLLOUT?

What resources do you use for creating your work?
Blogs, Magazines, Photography, Travel & Google

Can you share any of your secret tips?
Tanya is a camera junkie. She always has it on her just in case she needs to capture a moment on inspiration.
Jenn always has a sketch book beside her bed.

What did your parents want you to be instead of a designer? Tanya’s parents always knew she was going to do something in design because she loved to create and draw as a child. Jenn’s parents recognized that Interior Design was going to be her career from a young age. When they were in the process of building a house when Jenn was a child she would sneak the house plans into her bedroom late at night and trace over the plans. At the age of 12 Jenn tried to furnish an entire house from a Bay catalogue. Not her best work!

Is there a piece of art you wished you had created, and why? The holiday store display windows at Bergdorf Goodman in NYC...AMAZING! They are larger that life, so animated and intricate.

What gets you excited about tomorrow? Finishing a project, it gets me excited to move on to the next. Knowing that tomorrow I get to wake up as an Interior Designer, my childhood dream.

How would you refer to the current artistic style and mindset you live in today?
It's consistently evolving and moving, very refreshing.
