A Whole Lotta Love in We Like We Love

Design Milk Features a Day in the Life of ROLLOUT

The Designer Dailies column, which serves as a segment on the modern design blog and magazine, Design Milk, was created in an effort to highlight an average day in the life of a working designer. On September 20, 2011, ROLLOUT was the highlighted creative for this section, and shared our love for wings and bathtub follies.

DX Summer Camp for Your Budding Design Aficionado

While the bulk of us remember summer camp as haunting visions of mosquito repellent and soggy cheese sandwiches, the Design Exchange is looking to improve on the past with a series of one-week summer camps for children. As Canada's design centre and museum with a mission to promote the value of design, these DX summer camps have a central focus on education through hands-on workshops and engaging programming. Anita Modha will be speaking at the Retro Cool camp, and the participants, aged 10 to 12 years old, will draw on their subsequent inspiration. With this, they will channel their efforts into illustration and repetition in order to create an original wallpaper design. Beats a rainy game of tug-a-war, doesn't it?

Perusing Maison D'Objet in Paris, France

Plans that ROLLOUT executed beautifully while in Paris earlier this month: absorbing the latest and greatest in design and interiors at this year's Maison & Objet, and eating enough croissants to give an Atkins enthusiast nightmares for 2 years. Unexpected twist: train strike in Paris, which resulted in an extra few days of walking and croissant eating. Deduction: train strikes aren't always a bad thing.

HGTV Article Includes Worth Wallpaper in Kitchen Redesign

One Way Or Another, a Play on the Personal Nature of the Skateboard

ROLLOUT has been selected to contribute their visual prowess to One Way Or Another, a joint effort by Society6.com and Club Mumble.com in support of Contributor, an organization that provides skateboards to Canadian youth and at risk children.

Forty artists/collectives from around the world were chosen from an open call for submissions, with each available to produce original works of art on ten blank maple skate decks. What makes this project unique, is that rather than people buying a completed piece of artwork, their online purchase will serve as a commission for their chosen artist/studio to make a board especially for them. With this set up, when your board arrives, it's an unexpected surprise!

Sale of the decks is currently on and runs until August 15th, 2010, with all proceeds from the sales going directly back to those in need. To view a full listing of artists available, visit wearecontributors.com.

Affective Design

We were recently interviewed by Trevor van Gorp of affectivedesign.org - a site dedicated to exploring and understanding the “heart” of design; the effects of design on the emotional affect created by people’s interaction with products, brands and services. Affective Design is widely recognized as one of the top blogs on the topic of design and emotion. Every month, they are visited by folks working in small design shops, agencies, universities, and leading companies in marketing, software, telecommunications and product manufacturing. They all have at least one one thing in common. They want to learn more about designing for emotion.

ROLLOUT’s Street Laboratory At Pecha Kucha Night

ROLLOUT was proud to be one of twelve speakers selected by Cause+Affect to present at the Vancouver version of design salon Pecha Kucha Night which is now held in 242 cities worldwide. Pecha Kucha Night, devised by Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, was conceived in 2003 as a place for young designers to meet, network, and show their work in public. Each presenter is limited to twenty slides of their choice with twenty seconds to talk about each slide with a total time of 6 minutes 40 seconds in which to convey your ideas. Our theme was ‘The Street As Laboratory’ and we showed works by local artists such as street artist Cameraman and photographer Sean Orr as well as pieces by international art stars like Banksy and Alexander Orion. We wanted to talk about how our design process is powered by both the experiments of street art and the simple exposure to hidden beauty to be found by wandering Vancouver’s lanes and alleys. The event was a huge success and was attended by over 500 design aficionados. Local photographer Maurice Li, who snapped the shots above of the event, said “I really enjoyed the ROLLOUT presentation as well – perfect blend of showcase for your work and your inspirations!” Cheers Maurice and a big thank you to Jane and Steven for asking us to get involved!

The Art of Wallpaper at Cambridge Gallery

ROLLOUT took part in the group show The Art of Wallpaper at Cambridge gallery in Ontario. Esther Shipman, Curator of Architecture and Design, chose two of our Artist Series Papers, ‘Sultry Hair’ & ‘Words Spoken Quieter Than Action’, as well as our collaborative piece with Bandit, ‘Killed Bill’. The show was yet another indication of wallpaper’s changing role and heightened profile in the design world as it celebrated the “…current exploration of new materials and subject matter, and the impact of digital technology on wallpaper design and production.” The show has been embraced by academics and designers alike with one gallery goer being heard to observe: “I’m looking at wallpaper with new eyes.”

ROLLOUT at New York Fashion Week Spring 2010

This September ROLLOUT returns to New York Fashion Week for its sophomore year as designers. Last year we were asked by Eric Villency, of renowned New York design company Maurice Villency, to create a custom wall-covering for the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge. We had to work quickly and to a very high creative standard. The resulting design was praised by the likes of Timeout NY, who enthused ”...it’s gorgeous prints like these that make us sad we don’t have bigger walls in these NYC apartments.”

So we are thrilled to be asked to again rise to the challenge of creating a new custom paper for the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge. This year ROLLOUT was an integral part of the entire design process right from the beginning, which allowed us to embrace more complex themes in a more immersive space. We were asked for a piece which blended the elegant motion of a Mercedes convertible moving through the landscape, with the blur and bustle of fashion week’s human energy. We wanted to create a sense of being transported, within an environment which reflected the contours, textures and details of a Mercedes-Benz interior, to the regal environs of Bryant park. We wanted to bring the changing planetrees and turning leaves of an NYC autumn inside and, as this will be the last Fashion Week in Bryant Square, to bid a fond farewell.

Considering that the likes of Heidi Klum and Anna Wintour were photographed drinking champagne in front of our paper last year, we can’t wait to see who will be lounging in front of our latest custom design this year.

Cambridge Galleries Opening - The Art of Wallpaper

The Art of Wallpaper (September 01 – October 18, 2009)
Opening reception Saturday September 12, 2:30pm
Cambridge Galleries Design at Riverside

ROLLOUT will be showing multiple papers in the show ranging from fashion focussed and playful to more pieces reflecting more serious social commentary. In many ways the description of the Cambridge gallery show sums up our philosophy as a company and as designers:

“Wallpaper emerges from the background to the forefront of new design. The Art of Wallpaper celebrates the art behind the popular, yet often maligned decorative device, and its recent revival. From early 20th century hand painted samples by Europe’s top studios, The Art of Wallpaper fast forwards to today’s bespoke, limited edition, and designer production lines that serve as a unique creative outlet for artists and designers from around the world.”

ROLLOUT Stays Up Past It's Bedtime at ICFF

ROLLOUT has just returned wide-eyed and breathless from the incredible experience of displaying its wares (alongside many fellow Canadian designers) at the International Contemporary Furniture Festival in New York City. The ICFF, held in the gargantuan Javits Center (see above), is North America’s ‘singular showcase for contemporary design’ and we were in some pretty excellent company. As always the festival was a hugely inspiring opportunity to connect with fellow designers and potential clients and we plan to turn all that energy into some fantastic new projects and products in the near future. Thank you so much to those of you who dropped by to say hello and pick up a set of our custom one inch buttons.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week NY 2009

Champagne flute still in hand, ROLLOUT has returned from the marvelous madness of NY Fashion week where we debuted a ROLLOUT paper in the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge. The lounge and ROLLOUT's paper were covered by various media including Timeout NY, who raved "...it's gorgeous prints like these that make us sad we don't have bigger walls in these NYC apartments." This season the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge was designed by Eric Villency, president of Maurice Villency. Speaking about the lounge, Eric enthused "...there are different focal points in the room, but the overall focus definitely has to be the wallpaper and it's a very dynamic design statement, it's a very bold colour, the unifying motif is hopefulness, we wanted to have a positive energy, the idea of an oasis". Watch it here. We like that this ROLLOUT covered oasis features the likes of Heidi Klum and Kimora Lee Simons chilling out in it. See it here. Photograph compliments of the Mercedes-Benz Star Lounge.
